Classes & Workshops

Check out our current and upcoming dance classes listed below. Students taking any weekday class can attend our Weekly Tuesday Open Dance for FREE.

What class should I take?
Beginning Swing is different every month.  You will learn swing dance footwork, rhythms and partner connection, and we will build your dance skills throughout the month.  We encourage people to take these classes for 1-6 months.
Other classes expect you to be familiar with the skills learned in Beginning Swing.  If you are not sure if you are ready for a class, check in with the instructor or email us to ask.  Our other classes include a rotation of Lindy Hop Fundamentals, Continuing Lindy Hop and Special Topics (like Charleston, Collegiate Shag or Solo Jazz)

    - You can comfortably demonstrate at 140 beats per minute the skills presented in both Lindyhop Fundamentals (level 1) and Continuing Lindyhop (level 2): Open basic, circle, swingout, arm tension, partner connection, and some common beginning moves such as passes, tuck turns, etc.
    - You are comfortable flowing between 6 and 8 count
    - You have an into-level understanding of musicality and how it applies to dance
To meet these skills, you have likely been dancing Lindy Hop for at least 6 months, possibly a 1 year or more. Unsure if you are ready? Ask a VT Swing Instructor to check in, we’d love to help you find the best fit!

Let's get you out on the dance floor!

In this class you'll learn the basics of swing dancing.  You'll get moving to big band and swing music, learn how to communicate through lead and follow connection and get lots of practice with 6 count footwork.  This class is great for beginning level swing students with any amount of experience (or no experience).  We'll make sure to do something a bit different than last month so there will be something new for repeating students too!

For new dancers, this is a series class.  Please plan to start June 4 and come the whole month!  People who have taken Beginning Swing before are welcome to drop in any week to learn some new things and hone your dance skills.  No partner necessary.

    Details:
Cost: $15/$10 for students, $50/$40 for the 4-week series
    Teacher: Sarah and Christianna

Please pre register using the form at the top right of this page.
Bring clean shoes that won't track in grit or leave black heel marks. Parking is limited, so plan to park on nearby streets and walk to the North Start Hall at 20 Crowley Street.

Continuing Lindy Hop - June

Tune up and embellish your swing outs!  If you took Lindy Hop Fundamentals and felt comfortable with what you learned, then this is the right class for you.  You should know the eight-count footwork and be able to do a swing out from open, swing out from closed and lindy circle.  We'll build your repertoire of Lindy Hop moves while focusing in on the connection and musicality that make this dance so much fun.

This class will be in the smaller downstairs Oak Room, so there will be a limit to class size.   Pre-registration is necessary to assure a spot.   Please notify us if you register, and find that you won't be able to attend so we can open your spot to another student.

    Details:
*Prior approval needed to take this as a drop-in class
Cost: Cost: $15/$10 for students, $50/$40 for the 4-week series

July Beginning Swing - AMBIDANCE Style
Tuesdays  Jul 2 - Jul 23
6:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Click Here For Class Description

Our Beginning Swing class in July will be taught as an amibidance dance lesson.  What does that mean?  It means Everyone Leads, Everyone Follows.  Instead of segregating into a lead or follow role within the first few minutes of class, which you maintain throughout the 4-weeks (when you may not know which role suits you because you've never done partner dancing before!), everyone will learn how to lead and follow each move in every class.

The benefits of learning ambidance style: even though the lessons may cover less moves and are at a slower pace, you develop a deeper knowledge of the moves and enhance connection with your partner; you learn things twice, which helps retain what you've learned; allows the class to always be balanced between leads and follows - no one sits out a partner rotation; role exploration without gender bias and stereotypes; inclusive of everyone and active participation by both roles during lesson - no one tunes out.  You get to dance with everyone in the class and not just those of the opposite role!

No dance experience needed. This class is appropriate for all levels of dancer; we welcome those who have danced a specific role and would like to try the other.
